Five Four Fridays. #17

I have a sunburn in March. How does that happen in Ontario? I thought I was going to be waist deep in snow and literally freezing to death this winter. Instead, I’m wearing sandals and shades and basking in the glorious warmth of the sun. By no means am I complaining, although it does make it pretty hard to get any work done, which I have a ridiculous amount of. Music to take my mind off of it all?
I think so.

Today I threw together a few tracks you can still rock hard to but have a sunny day bounce to them. Starts off with a classic from the UK’s most underrated producer, Phonat. Then goes into one of the latest tracks from the young Australian I’ve recently been following thanks to one half of Victoria’s WKND Warriors. Next up is the latest amazing work from one of my favourite producers out there, Behdad Nejatbakhshe; known as Uppermost by us who won’t endure the embarrassment of butchering his name. Then there is a track that was dropped in my inbox the other day by a girl named Kendra. Seriously good find, so the credit goes to her this time. Lastly we finish up with the latest rework from my second favourite French electro duo of all time. You should know who takes the cake on that one. Seriously hope you put these tracks to good use this St. Patty’s day weekend. They may not be Irish, but let’s be honest, neither are you.

The beginning of the end.

We always forget how quickly three hundred and sixty five days can pass. So much can happen in that period of time. Just take a look at the news and see how much the world has changed in only a year. Personally (yes, I’m about to get all sentimental on you guys), this past year has been the best in my life. I started writing in this space for one, moved to a new city, met tons of utterly amazing people with whom I know I’ll be sharing my life for years to come, realized that I am truly on the path to an industry that I belong in, realized that I’m a huge geek and became incredibly comfortable with that fact and in turn, myself.

In terms of music, 2011 was a massive year for the electronic music scene. We witnessed the beats and bass seep into popular culture. We witnessed the rise of dubstep’s popularity and the impact it made on the world. More than anything I think we witnessed the bewilderment from those who don’t understand it all and that it is a scene and attitude more than just a genre. I absolutely love it and chances are that if you’re reading this, you do too. I hope I’ve been able to help those artists that deserve a little recognition for the hours of hard work and countless late nights that they put into reassuring a good time to be had by all. I’d like to make a toast to all of them, and to all of you readers.

Five Four Fridays. #8

The weekend is finally here and what an insane week it has been. Massive amounts of tasty (and not so tasty) elixirs all week leading up to my birthday, and on my big day my roommate and I somehow mustered up the energy to get to the Porter Robinson show that I’d bought tickets for a month in advance. It was a rough ride into the city, but I’m so glad that I managed to see him rock out. Honestly, one of the greatest sets I’ve ever heard, and he was just loving every second of it. Really gave the whole show a great vibe.

When I interviewed Rich, he was in the middle of working on this track, and oh my goodness what a track it is. Cannot wait for the official release on November 29th. I’ve decided to spend the majority of my remaining time before moving to Toronto at my cabin on Vancouver island. Even though it’s friday, I can’t quite say I’m in the proper mindset to fire up. I’m in a more, ‘kick back and have a few beers by the fire with some friends’ kind of mood. To start things off, we’ve got a few new tracks from the young French electro house duo known as The Noisy Freaks. Charles and Julien have been producing up a storm lately and it is quite easy to tell after hearing their two newest releases. As usual with these guys, be warned that you’ll be heavily banging your head along with the beat in no time.

I can’t tell you how excited I am for this next track to be released. For those of you who have never heard of Al Bizzare, you are not alone. There is virtually no information on them anywhere and most people mistook their most popular track, Fresh Scream, to be the work of a handful of other major artists. All you need to know about these guys is that they are a DJ duo from St. Petersburg, Russia, and everything they crank out is pure electronic bliss.

OVERWERK is a producer from Ontario whom I am a big fan of and cannot wait to get a chance to see live when I move back East in a couple weeks. He’s been pretty quiet lately but had this to say when he dropped this banger the other day: “Sorry for the long absence but I’ve actually been working on so many songs non stop. I want to make sure the EP blows people away, but to tie everyone over here is a NEW REMIX I did of Magic Trooper!” Now, Mord Fustang is one of my favorite producers, and I had yet to hear a proper remix of one of his tracks until this one. Well done Ed, seriously.
