The beginning of the end.

31 Dec

We always forget how quickly three hundred and sixty five days can pass. So much can happen in that period of time. Just take a look at the news and see how much the world has changed in only a year. Personally (yes, I’m about to get all sentimental on you guys), this past year has been the best in my life. I started writing in this space for one, moved to a new city, met tons of utterly amazing people with whom I know I’ll be sharing my life for years to come, realized that I am truly on the path to an industry that I belong in, realized that I’m a huge geek and became incredibly comfortable with that fact and in turn, myself.

In terms of music, 2011 was a massive year for the electronic music scene. We witnessed the beats and bass seep into popular culture. We witnessed the rise of dubstep’s popularity and the impact it made on the world. More than anything I think we witnessed the bewilderment from those who don’t understand it all and that it is a scene and attitude more than just a genre. I absolutely love it and chances are that if you’re reading this, you do too. I hope I’ve been able to help those artists that deserve a little recognition for the hours of hard work and countless late nights that they put into reassuring a good time to be had by all. I’d like to make a toast to all of them, and to all of you readers.

Bring it on 2012,

Grant.

I apologize for my absence so this should do it for all the weekend warriors.

Yours truly,

Grant.

Five Four Fridays.

It’s been a while hasn’t it. My body has been to hell and back in the past three weeks. I honestly hadn’t slept properly in over a month because of all the papers, projects, presentations, stresses, and poor time management. I don’t think that I would have made it through if it weren’t for the sort of music that I’m giving you an abundance of below. Something about electronic music has always fascinated me. The music itself always gets knocked for being anything but, but that’s not the point I’m getting at. There’s just something that the music does to people. You could power an entire city with the energy that a venue exudes when the combination of man and machine produce just the right amount of beats and bass. One could go to a solid show without any sort of party additive and get high off the vibes. It’s honestly indescribable. Unfortunately, the scene lately has made drugs trendy again, but hey, you can’t win every battle.

Below is another amazing remix from none other than the electro guru himself, a rework form a highly underrated Torontonian, a random mix that I had sent to me last week, a poppy but still wickedly awesome remix from a DJ who’s name I always get wrong, and finally the release of one of the best remixes of the year from a guy who’s alias has no relation whatsoever to his hometown of Atlanta. Hopefully they can keep you going too.

Chris Lake – Sundown (Lazy Rich Remix) [Mediafire]

Kaskade – 4AM (Adam K & Soha Remix) [Mediafire]

La Roux – Bulletproof (Tiborg Remix) [Mediafire]

Dev – Kiss My Lips ft. Fabolous (DJ Kue Remix) [Mediafire]

Kaskade – Turn It Down ft. Rebecca & Fiona (Le Castle Vania Remix) [Mediafire]

Bonus Mix.

Forty five uninterrupted minutes of a UK up and comer? Heck yes.

Special Features – Red Nosed Mix [Mediafire]

Bonus Insanity.

Two new bangers for the rowdy shelf and a dirty filthy remix that may cause moments of body tossing to the beat.

Avicii – Levels (Skrillex Remix) [Mediafire]

Charlie Darker – Deadroll (Original Mix) [SoundCloud]

Porter Robinson – Unison (Knife Party Remix) [Mediafire]

Spotlight Saturdays.

When I was flat broke not too long ago, Dada Life tickets went on sale here in Vancouver (Yes, I’m back in rain city for the holidays). I cried on the inside in combination with the sounds of a five year old girl sobbing that were in no way coming from myself. The Swedish goonshow puts on my all time favourite electro show hands down. The amount of fun and shenanigans that these guys have while performing should land them a reality TV show. Not to mention the effect that it has on the equally ridiculous crowd.

Thank goodness that my friend kept me up to date with their tour stop in Toronto the day after I sadly sold my car so I could afford to purchase tickets which I literally just did. There was no way that I’d miss out on the most fun I’ve had on a dance floor twice in a months time. I don’t really need to say much more about these guys since the new music video sort of speaks for itself. If you’re a fellow ticket holder and love bananas and champagne, you’re in for a treat because there will be no shortage of either at the show. Don’t even try to tell me that’s not an awesome combination.

Dada Life – Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Original Mix) [Mediafire]

MVSEVM – French Jeans (Dada Life Remix) [Mediafire]

Dada Life – Happy Violence ft. Sue Cho (Vocal Mix) [Mediafire]

Alex Gopher – Handguns (Dada Life Remix) [Mediafire]

Dada Life – White Noise Red Meat (Original Mix) [Mediafire]

Kaskade – Dynasty ft. Haley (Dada Life Remix) [Medafire]

Five Four Fridays. #8

18 Nov

The weekend is finally here and what an insane week it has been. Massive amounts of tasty (and not so tasty) elixirs all week leading up to my birthday, and on my big day my roommate and I somehow mustered up the energy to get to the Porter Robinson show that I’d bought tickets for a month in advance. It was a rough ride into the city, but I’m so glad that I managed to see him rock out. Honestly, one of the greatest sets I’ve ever heard, and he was just loving every second of it. Really gave the whole show a great vibe.

To match the insanity of the week, here is a bundle of new tracks with obscene amounts of bass to help you go nuts this weekend. I’ve been itching to post these all week so I seriously hope you enjoy them as much as I will. Enough with the chit chat, get to fist pumping (if that’s what you’re into).

Pump on,

Grant.

Porter Robinson – Unison (Mikkas Remix) [Mediafire]

Felguk – Blow Out (Lazy Rich Remix) [Mediafire]

The Noisy Freaks – Dream Team (Mashup) [Mediafire]

Steve Aoki – Earthquakey People (Dillon Francis Remix) [Mediafire]

Feed Me – What You Know (Two Door Cinema Club Cover) [Mediafire]

Bonus Radio Rip.

Swedish House Mafia & Knife Party – Antidote (Vocal Version) [Mediafire]

Bonus Preview.

When I interviewed Rich, he was in the middle of working on this track, and oh my goodness what a track it is. Cannot wait for the official release on November 29th. Same with quite a few HUGE tracks that he’ll be releasing over the next couple months. On his fan page earlier this week he revealed some of the tracks by saying “there is a Chris Lake remix that you will hear on my radio show on thursday, a remix for Morgan Page (tiny sample in that video), a remix for Zedd, a remix for Porter Robinson (that is sounding “WOWWWW omgggg holy shit man” according to Porter) and a collab with Chris Lake, plus some other new originals, and a very special secret remix that I can’t mention yet.” Do I need to reiterate why he is one of my favourite producers of all time?

Chris Lake – Sundown (Lazy Rich Remix) [Preview]

Double Bonus of sheer unconfirmed insanity.

Skrillex & Feed Me – Loud Noises (Unconfirmed) [Mediafire]

_____ Fridays.

23 Sep

So, for reasons which I cannot comprehend, the typical college/university student’s weekend begins on Thursday here in Ontario. Lucky for me that my only early class is on Friday morning. This morning I woke up at 7:45 to a ringing in my ears, a stomach full of wings and beer, and a full sized bench in my apartment that my roommate and I supposedly brought home the previous night. I honestly thought I just dreamt that part. Anyways, enough chit chat and let’s get on with the music.

I think from now on I might try to keep some sort of consistency with this blog. Fridays will be more focused on bringing you my current favourite electro remixes or originals, whereas Saturdays will be more focused on one single artist’s efforts. I’ll come up with what I’ll consistently be doing midweek at another time. I’ve already got a catchy name for Saturday features, but I need some help with naming Friday night features. Please email me your suggestion and I’ll figure out something cool to do for you. Trust me, it’ll be pretty awesome.

I’m either really lazy or extremely clever,

Grant.

Tim Berg – Seek Bromance (Porter Robinson Remix) [Mediafire]

Nothing lazy about him.

18 Jun

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with rum. When I was a little high schooler, I used to love it. As what happens with most underage drinkers, I overdid it one night and swore off my latest enemy for the rest of my life. Another example: last night I loved rum. This morning I hated it. Tonight, I’m going to take another swing at falling in love with it’s cheap counterpart. Let’s get some filthy tuneage going to match my disgusting drink of choice.

Last week I posted two of this guy’s tracks for you to indulge in. This week, I will hook you up with some more, including two originals. Richard ‘Lazy Rich’ Billis is a world renowned dubstep/electro house producer originally from the UK. He now resides in Vancouver, right across the street from where I used to work. Why oh why did I have to switch locations?

I hope you get rowdy to this,

Grant.
