Five Four Fridays. #16

24 Feb

I swear I’m going through poutine and smoked meat withdrawal. I just spent the weekend and part of this week in Montreal for the first time, and it was probably one of the most ridiculous periods of time in my life. My once fluent French having turned into some sort of Spanish/French hybrid didn’t help make things all that much easier either. Just the first night alone was enough to be the basis for the next ‘Hangover’ movie. The fact that we literally stumbled across a Zeds Dead show in an art gallery was the cherry on top.

Without further adieu, here are the bangers that have been on high rotation this week. First up is a track that may take a proper listen or two to really appreciate. I could see it being a wicked track for someone to drop live at a high energy venue. Next up is a new track off the new record from the Mau5trap signed German talent known as Moguai. Super heavy on the vocals, utilizing real drums, and on its way to being classified as pop, it’s a sweet track to jam to. After that is a classic from two crazy Italians that should require no introduction. If you were watching the Grammys, you would have caught a live rendition of the next track. Pretty cool to see on National television regardless if you love or hate the sudden North American rise in popularity of EDM. Last up is the new remix from Pendulum’s side project. The intro and breakdowns are unlike any other track they’ve done before, but once the drop comes in and kicks you in the face, you remember who you were listening to in the first place.

J’aime la musique électronique,

Grant.

The beginning of the end.

We always forget how quickly three hundred and sixty five days can pass. So much can happen in that period of time. Just take a look at the news and see how much the world has changed in only a year. Personally (yes, I’m about to get all sentimental on you guys), this past year has been the best in my life. I started writing in this space for one, moved to a new city, met tons of utterly amazing people with whom I know I’ll be sharing my life for years to come, realized that I am truly on the path to an industry that I belong in, realized that I’m a huge geek and became incredibly comfortable with that fact and in turn, myself.

In terms of music, 2011 was a massive year for the electronic music scene. We witnessed the beats and bass seep into popular culture. We witnessed the rise of dubstep’s popularity and the impact it made on the world. More than anything I think we witnessed the bewilderment from those who don’t understand it all and that it is a scene and attitude more than just a genre. I absolutely love it and chances are that if you’re reading this, you do too. I hope I’ve been able to help those artists that deserve a little recognition for the hours of hard work and countless late nights that they put into reassuring a good time to be had by all. I’d like to make a toast to all of them, and to all of you readers.

Bring it on 2012,

Grant.

Five Four Fridays. #8

18 Nov

The weekend is finally here and what an insane week it has been. Massive amounts of tasty (and not so tasty) elixirs all week leading up to my birthday, and on my big day my roommate and I somehow mustered up the energy to get to the Porter Robinson show that I’d bought tickets for a month in advance. It was a rough ride into the city, but I’m so glad that I managed to see him rock out. Honestly, one of the greatest sets I’ve ever heard, and he was just loving every second of it. Really gave the whole show a great vibe.

To match the insanity of the week, here is a bundle of new tracks with obscene amounts of bass to help you go nuts this weekend. I’ve been itching to post these all week so I seriously hope you enjoy them as much as I will. Enough with the chit chat, get to fist pumping (if that’s what you’re into).

Pump on,

Grant.

Bonus Preview.

When I interviewed Rich, he was in the middle of working on this track, and oh my goodness what a track it is. Cannot wait for the official release on November 29th. Same with quite a few HUGE tracks that he’ll be releasing over the next couple months. On his fan page earlier this week he revealed some of the tracks by saying “there is a Chris Lake remix that you will hear on my radio show on thursday, a remix for Morgan Page (tiny sample in that video), a remix for Zedd, a remix for Porter Robinson (that is sounding “WOWWWW omgggg holy shit man” according to Porter) and a collab with Chris Lake, plus some other new originals, and a very special secret remix that I can’t mention yet.” Do I need to reiterate why he is one of my favourite producers of all time?

Chris Lake – Sundown (Lazy Rich Remix) [Preview]

Double Bonus of sheer unconfirmed insanity.

Happy Hallo…wait, it falls on a Monday this year doesn’t it. Personally, I don’t know why everyone is complaining about this minute detail. It may be because I have Tuesdays off, but really this just means that partying is necessary on the days leading up to the thirty first. And would you look at that, there’s three nights of opportunity before the big day.

For a weekend filled with substance abuse, very little clothing, and unavoidable frostbite, I’ve got a few treats for you party people; no tricks here (I had to say it). New track from Steve Lade and XspectiV that I’ve been obsessing over all week, the best remix of the new pop club anthem, a preview of Fussy Boy’s turn to remix Mord Fustang, and a rework that surpasses the original from the sixteen year old talent known only as Caveat. Hope these will do you some good tonight.

Be safe, and ladies: don’t worry, jackets are still sexy,

Grant.

Sexy Haus.

Special Halloween bonus.

PREVIEW Alesso – Raise Your Head (Original Mix) [ListenOnly]

And I actually have a request.

Dillon Francis is a bit of a hit or miss with me. The guy clearly has a musical ear since he’s always got some of the most harmonious melodies out of almost any producer out there, especially in his genre; moombaton. Who the hell made up that name… Anyways, the guy undeniably has talent. His latest release I.D.G.A.F.O.S. has a melody that is straight orgasmic before the insanity kicks in. Great track, but for me the buildup and the drop don’t quite suit each other.

If there are any ambitious producers out there, please, please, PLEASE, use from 0:00 – 1:27 and 2:54 – the end as a sample for a remix or bootlegged track. I will personally mail you two fifty (the going rate for a track on Beatport) and a photocopied image of my hand (to signify a high five) as a token of my gratitude.

Ah yes, Thanksgiving. The time of year you get to spend with your family and of course, turkey. This year, I won’t be getting either of those things for the first time in my life. Instead, I have opted to replace them both with copious amounts of beer. I swear I had no other choice.

Kitchener, Ontario, is home of the second largest beer festival in the world aside from the real Oktoberfest in Berlin. The reason why is that Kitchener actually used to be called Berlin. Makes sense right? Either way, after my marketing class, my friends and I will be immediately heading out for what will most certainly be one of the most ridiculous nights of the year. Here are some tracks for you to get ridiculous to as well, or a soundtrack for eating turkey if that’s what you’re into.

Happy Thanksgivin’er everybody,

Grant.

Check back tomorrow mid afternoon for DL links. Running out of time again here.
