Electronic goes easy.

4 Jan

As I sit here in my room with nothing but a computer and a pair of headphones, I realize that this is the first time I’ve actually been doing this since being back in Vancouver for the holidays. Ever since the moment I’ve been back, I haven’t stopped moving. Be it family time, spreading holiday cheer, selling my car, or catching up with old and new friends, I’ve been spread far too thin for far too long. Tonight is my night to just do a little less and slow it all down.

I love seeing artists take this approach to music, especially those that usually provide some of the highest energy tracks around.  Crystalised is an electro house wonder from France who’s style is as consistent as the sun is to rise; save for the beautiful curveball below. I think you all know the second track’s creator. Joel has been more recently uploading these sorts of alternate versions of some of his most popular tracks on SoundCloud, and I’ve been loving each and every one of them. The last I think needs no real explanation. We all know his typical rambunctious sound, so take in every beat of this wicked song off his recent EP, Bangarang.

Life looks just as good in slow motion,

Grant.

I don’t really think I need to explain why this is here. Enjoy.

The beginning of the end.

We always forget how quickly three hundred and sixty five days can pass. So much can happen in that period of time. Just take a look at the news and see how much the world has changed in only a year. Personally (yes, I’m about to get all sentimental on you guys), this past year has been the best in my life. I started writing in this space for one, moved to a new city, met tons of utterly amazing people with whom I know I’ll be sharing my life for years to come, realized that I am truly on the path to an industry that I belong in, realized that I’m a huge geek and became incredibly comfortable with that fact and in turn, myself.

In terms of music, 2011 was a massive year for the electronic music scene. We witnessed the beats and bass seep into popular culture. We witnessed the rise of dubstep’s popularity and the impact it made on the world. More than anything I think we witnessed the bewilderment from those who don’t understand it all and that it is a scene and attitude more than just a genre. I absolutely love it and chances are that if you’re reading this, you do too. I hope I’ve been able to help those artists that deserve a little recognition for the hours of hard work and countless late nights that they put into reassuring a good time to be had by all. I’d like to make a toast to all of them, and to all of you readers.

Bring it on 2012,

Grant.

Five Four Fridays. #6

4 Nov

Why do Thursdays always have to be rowdy? Somehow I always get convinced to go out on Thursday nights despite having class at nine the next morning. This was probably one of the roughest mornings since I’ve been here in Toronto since, if I can recall, we were asleep by about five in the morning. On top of extreme lack of sleep, my phone finally kicked the bucket. It’s weird not being able to be reached so easily, I kind of like it.

Even though I’m most likely staying in tonight to make some headway on my multiple assignments, I’ve got some solid tunes for you all this week. A needle in the haystack of many Ellie remixes, a new remix from an upcoming UK producer, another new amazing remix from a Halifax based producer, the most unique of the many new amazing Happy Violence remixes, and a new original from the always amazing and wonderfully Canadian producer from London, Ontario.

OVERWERK’s manager actually sent me an email yesterday about his new track featured below, perfect timing. As it turns out, Ed was actually commissioned to make ‘Buzzin’ for a group of Norwegian kids. They’re planning on using it as their theme song when they celebrate Russefeiring next May. You can scope out their Facebook page to see what I’m on about.

Anybody have a spare Bell phone to donate?

Grant.

Spotlight Saturdays. #2

8 Oct

It’s Saturday night, and I’m stuck at home chipping away at my now insane pile of work. All of my friends have gone home for Thanksgiving weekend so hopefully I’ll actually get some work done since it’s pretty quiet around here. I think it’s actually a little too quiet now that I think of it. Let’s change that.

Usually I’m not the biggest fan of mashups. Too many times have they simply been noise in my ears because too much is going on. It takes a lot of skill to actually make an entirely song out of a handful of other tracks. Because of this, I have mad respect for the Las Vegas born finance student known by the world as 3LAU. This cat has only been mashing up bangers since last February. How is that even possible? I hope you’re prepared to have your mind obliterated.

In case you’re curious, it’s pronounced ‘Blau’ after his name; Justin Blau,

Grant.

3LAU – Girls Who Save The World [SoundCloud]

3LAU – All Night Long [SoundCloud]

3LAU – Rave Dirty [SoundCloud]

3LAU & Kap Slap – Turbulent Rock Anthem [SoundCloud]

Yes, it’s all for free on his SoundCloud. What a nice guy.

_____ Fridays.

23 Sep

So, for reasons which I cannot comprehend, the typical college/university student’s weekend begins on Thursday here in Ontario. Lucky for me that my only early class is on Friday morning. This morning I woke up at 7:45 to a ringing in my ears, a stomach full of wings and beer, and a full sized bench in my apartment that my roommate and I supposedly brought home the previous night. I honestly thought I just dreamt that part. Anyways, enough chit chat and let’s get on with the music.

I think from now on I might try to keep some sort of consistency with this blog. Fridays will be more focused on bringing you my current favourite electro remixes or originals, whereas Saturdays will be more focused on one single artist’s efforts. I’ll come up with what I’ll consistently be doing midweek at another time. I’ve already got a catchy name for Saturday features, but I need some help with naming Friday night features. Please email me your suggestion and I’ll figure out something cool to do for you. Trust me, it’ll be pretty awesome.

I’m either really lazy or extremely clever,

Grant.
