Spotlight Saturdays. #2

It’s Saturday night, and I’m stuck at home chipping away at my now insane pile of work. All of my friends have gone home for Thanksgiving weekend so hopefully I’ll actually get some work done since it’s pretty quiet around here. I think it’s actually a little too quiet now that I think of it. Let’s change that.

Usually I’m not the biggest fan of mashups. Too many times have they simply been noise in my ears because too much is going on. It takes a lot of skill to actually make an entirely song out of a handful of other tracks. Because of this, I have mad respect for the Las Vegas born finance student known by the world as 3LAU. This cat has only been mashing up bangers since last February. How is that even possible? I hope you’re prepared to have your mind obliterated.

I’ve decided to spend the majority of my remaining time before moving to Toronto at my cabin on Vancouver island. Even though it’s friday, I can’t quite say I’m in the proper mindset to fire up. I’m in a more, ‘kick back and have a few beers by the fire with some friends’ kind of mood. But, because I know that all of you readers out there are crazy party people, I’ll give you some new tracks to rock out to.

To start things off, we’ve got a few new tracks from the young French electro house duo known as The Noisy Freaks. Charles and Julien have been producing up a storm lately and it is quite easy to tell after hearing their two newest releases. As usual with these guys, be warned that you’ll be heavily banging your head along with the beat in no time.

I can’t tell you how excited I am for this next track to be released. For those of you who have never heard of Al Bizzare, you are not alone. There is virtually no information on them anywhere and most people mistook their most popular track, Fresh Scream, to be the work of a handful of other major artists. All you need to know about these guys is that they are a DJ duo from St. Petersburg, Russia, and everything they crank out is pure electronic bliss.

To finish things off for this Friday, I’ll leave you with some homegrown talent from right here in Canada. OVERWERK is a producer from Ontario whom I am a big fan of and cannot wait to get a chance to see live when I move back East in a couple weeks. He’s been pretty quiet lately but had this to say when he dropped this banger the other day: “Sorry for the long absence but I’ve actually been working on so many songs non stop. I want to make sure the EP blows people away, but to tie everyone over here is a NEW REMIX I did of Magic Trooper!” Now, Mord Fustang is one of my favorite producers, and I had yet to hear a proper remix of one of his tracks until this one. Well done Ed, seriously.

I think Calvin Harris may have topped the Swedish House Mafia for the track of the summer. A couple weeks ago, this track was previewed on BBC Radio 1 and I don’t think that my group of friends have stopped listening to it yet. Definitely a perfect drive-around-in-the-sunshine kind of song. Thanks Calvin.

Of course I’ll save the best for last. As usual, the Brazilian duo known only as Darth & Vader cannot crank out a track without it being one of the most technical and rowdy things you’ve ever heard. This last month they were the guest producer on Lazy Rich’s monthly podcast. I highly, highly recommend subscribing to it via Itunes. Once a month, Rich will show you his current top ten favorite tracks, play unreleased tracks on his label, Big Fish Recordings, and a give you an hour long exclusive guest mix. Trust me, he has great taste. Simply go to Itunes and it should be easy enough to find in the Podcast section.

Two of my most recent faves, Mord Fustang and Darth & Vader, have dropped new tracks within the past week. Mord’s counces between being more laid back, then fistpumpable and is very Milky Way-esque, whereas D&V’s is straight filthy and rowdy. I highly recommend heading to Beatport and purchasing the full mixes because the previews below will only leave you wanting more. I just did, and I swear it was worth every penny.
