Five Four Fridays. #18

30 Mar

Today’s mixtape is a bit of a change. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you might have figured out by now that I seriously enjoy musicians are blending and bending genres. I love it when an artist takes aspects from one type of music, and injects it into another. It’s one of the reasons that Andre Anjos of RAC is one of my all time favourite musicians. This mixtape below is a collection of five tracks that blur the lines between Electronic and Hip Hop. That’s right.

Two side notes on this one. Keep an eye on Popeska, a nineteen year old and coming producer from Atlanta. I’ve been following his work on SoundCloud for a while now, and he’s plays with a pretty versatile sound that will definitely be taking him places. It changes from track to track, but generally he has a hard style with intricate growls that could be compared to artists like Feed Me, but still keeps a level of catchy, melodic quality to each of his originals or remixes. Also, you might be asking, what is Mau5hax? It’s a new project that Deadmau5 tried out during Ultra in Miami. Basically five aspiring producers are chosen, and the entire Mau5trap crew help them hone their skills and collaborate for an entire day. Oh, and it’s all streamed live. Pretty amazing project and it was definitely worth tuning in for. I know this mixtape might not be for everyone, but the tracks are worth a listen if you enjoy either genre.

The only constant is change,

Grant.

Zedd – Stars Come Out (Dillon Francis Remix) [Purchase]

Popeska – Sparks (Original Mix) [SoundCloud]

Mensura – Be Yourself (Mikkas Edit) [SoundCloud]

Bonus.

Finally Mord Fustang released a new EP. Last week his label dropped this out of the blue in the middle of the day and I almost let out a schoolgirl-esque squeal in the middle of lecture. Mord has done a bit of tweaking to his style and is definitely throwing in more bass to his sound. I honestly do like this EP, but it all becomes pretty repetitive. Each track is awesome but the second half is almost a perfect copy of the first. I hope to hear some pretty wicked remixes, bootlegs, and edits in the near future.

Mord Fustang – Welcome To The Future [Purchase]

Mord Fustang – The Majestic [Purchase]

Mord Fustang – Windwaker [Purchase]

Mord Fustang – Super Fever [Purchase]

Double Bonus.

Always love hearing new stuff from Ed. Giving it away for free as usual.

Hyper Crush – Werk Me (OVERWERK Remix) [SoundCloud]

I have a sunburn in March. How does that happen in Ontario? I thought I was going to be waist deep in snow and literally freezing to death this winter. Instead, I’m wearing sandals and shades and basking in the glorious warmth of the sun. By no means am I complaining, although it does make it pretty hard to get any work done, which I have a ridiculous amount of. Music to take my mind off of it all?
I think so.

Today I threw together a few tracks you can still rock hard to but have a sunny day bounce to them. Starts off with a classic from the UK’s most underrated producer, Phonat. Then goes into one of the latest tracks from the young Australian I’ve recently been following thanks to one half of Victoria’s WKND Warriors. Next up is the latest amazing work from one of my favourite producers out there, Behdad Nejatbakhshe; known as Uppermost by us who won’t endure the embarrassment of butchering his name. Then there is a track that was dropped in my inbox the other day by a girl named Kendra. Seriously good find, so the credit goes to her this time. Lastly we finish up with the latest rework from my second favourite French electro duo of all time. You should know who takes the cake on that one. Seriously hope you put these tracks to good use this St. Patty’s day weekend. They may not be Irish, but let’s be honest, neither are you.

May as well start pre-drinking for tomorrow,

Grant.

On another note, Deadmau5 and Cypress Hill? Yeah, that happened. I honestly can’t decide if I love this, or really, really dislike it.

I swear I’m going through poutine and smoked meat withdrawal. I just spent the weekend and part of this week in Montreal for the first time, and it was probably one of the most ridiculous periods of time in my life. My once fluent French having turned into some sort of Spanish/French hybrid didn’t help make things all that much easier either. Just the first night alone was enough to be the basis for the next ‘Hangover’ movie. The fact that we literally stumbled across a Zeds Dead show in an art gallery was the cherry on top.

Without further adieu, here are the bangers that have been on high rotation this week. First up is a track that may take a proper listen or two to really appreciate. I could see it being a wicked track for someone to drop live at a high energy venue. Next up is a new track off the new record from the Mau5trap signed German talent known as Moguai. Super heavy on the vocals, utilizing real drums, and on its way to being classified as pop, it’s a sweet track to jam to. After that is a classic from two crazy Italians that should require no introduction. If you were watching the Grammys, you would have caught a live rendition of the next track. Pretty cool to see on National television regardless if you love or hate the sudden North American rise in popularity of EDM. Last up is the new remix from Pendulum’s side project. The intro and breakdowns are unlike any other track they’ve done before, but once the drop comes in and kicks you in the face, you remember who you were listening to in the first place.

J’aime la musique électronique,

Grant.

It’s been an awesome twenty four hours. This time last night we were all preparing ourselves to do the Dada since the Swedish duo were in town and it was a friend’s birthday. What a better way to pop her electro show cherry than on her date of naissance and with one of the most entertaining shows out there. Knowing that she had a wicked time in a new scene reminded me why I love electronic music’s effect on people more than any other genre. Let’s keep the good times rolling.

Got some new bangers for you hoodlums tonight. New track from a wicked german producer that was released on none other than Deadmau5′ label. Next, we’ve finally got a new original from the rowdy Montreal melodic dubstep duo. Third is a combination of two new artists worth noting that are on tour with Mord Fustang and skipping Toronto altogether in their tour. No hard feelings, but I may or may not be crying inside. The next is probably my new favourite remix of Levels. As you all know by now, I’m a sucker for 8-bit and this has some of that going on with the perfect dash of wobble and Mord Fustang style melody. Last needs absolutely no explanation. I’ve been waiting for this release a long time, believe me. You all know who he is, so go get it.

Hope the birthday was rad Emily,

Grant.

This morning I woke up, looked out the window and thought to myself “It’s on Toronto.” The first snow has fallen, meaning my death is slowly creeping up on me, especially seeing as I don’t have a proper winter jacket yet. I figure if I layer like it’s nobody’s business I might be able to get by with minor frostbite. Regardless, as usual some pump up tunes are essential for this cold, bitter, Friday night.

The first track is my current favourite from a twenty year old up and comer from Chicago that will have you closing your eyes and taking a moment to just relax. The second is a needle in a haystack of other remixes that a beautiful girl passed on to me. The third is my new top remix of Dirty South’s already fantastic track. Next comes from someone that I know not a thing about, the complete opposite of the final hurrah of the night. One of my good friends, Dave, is DAKK from the Vancouver duo signed to UK label Audio Rejectz. Tonight they’re opening for the increasingly popular Adventure Club so if you’re in the city of rain and mountains, head to Celebrities and see if you can make your way in to support this abundance of talent. Can’t tell you how choked I am I can’t be there.

Never trust yellow snow cones,

Grant.
